My Favorite Pose...

See? How can I stay mad at a puppy who gives you these loving looks?
She's in my favorite dog pose -- paws on the sides of her head.
Gusto, our first puppy, used to make my favorite doggy pose all the time. Hmmm...and they were both fairly mischievous puppies....

A Trip to Liberty Science Center

A few weekends ago, we went to the Liberty Science Center with Quail's puppy club. It was a fun trip and even more relaxing for us since one of the youth members of the club who is currently puppy-less asked if she could borrow Quail for the day. We actually got to walk around without a puppy in tow.

My favorite part was seeing the turles, lizards and frogs. There were also tanks of giant fish.

We did see an exhibit of walking sticks and I just couldn't bring myself to go near the exhibit of giant cockroaches -- ew!!!

Our club gave a short demo/talk about raising a Seeing Eye pup -- as always we're trying to get more puppyraisers. Before lunch, we took a group shot -- there is our little Quail second dog in from the left. She was amazingly well-behaved for the girl and her family that had her during the outing!

Mind your P's and Q's...

In this case P is for Puppy and Q is for Quote, Quail and...Quasar!
We were at Rutgers this past Saturday for Rutgers' Day and the Seeing Eye Puppy Show. We ran into one of Quail's brothers -- Quasar! Of course we had to take picture of the three Q's.

Pay Attention to me...or the socks get it!!!

So my youngest sister got a new job. She will have to do a lot of talking at her new job so I figured she would need the practice. As a joke, I knit her a pair of these socks -- see all the faces? I figured she could talk to them and the best part is, they don't talk back :-)

Well, Quail must have decided that either

1. I spend more time on knitting than on her OR

2. She would like a pair of socks for herself -- or rather two pairs since she has 4 feet OR

3. The orange yarn was particularly yummy looking.

The day after I gave the socks to my sister, Quail got a hold of them. I came downstairs, she showed me she had the sock and then took off for a fun game of chase. When I caught her, I realized I no longer had a matching pair of socks...she ate the toe off of one of them.

To say that I was angry and upset is an understatement. Needless to say, I have learned my lesson -- all handknit items and probably everything else of any sort of value must be up high or put away out of the reach of puppy.

It's a good thing she is cute.

Another 15 minutes of fame for Anita...

Anita was the third puppy we raised for The Seeing Eye, Inc. She was part yellow lab and part golden retriever and just absolutely adorable. She was our petite puppy and our first female pup.
She was also our most timid pup. She was afraid to leave our property and it took a lot of coaxing to get her to go on walks in the very beginning. She was also afraid of cars, bikes, vacuum cleaners and the funniest thing...the salad spinner. The sound of the salad spinner would send her running for her crate where she just shook until we had dry salad. As a little puppy, I spent a lot of nights sleeping on the floor because she cried a lot. The funny thing is that she is also our most famous puppy.
Her first claim to fame was when she made WFAN radio's Mike and the Mad Dog show as a puppy. They just raved about how cute she was and since their radio show was simulcast on the YES Network, her picture appeared on cable tv too.
She left our home in 2008, but she recently had her next claim to fame. A letter written by the person she went to live with appeared in The Seeing Eye Guide: A Magazine for Friends of The Seeing Eye. It was a pared down letter of the one we received last year but it was still exciting to see the letter in actual print in a magazine. The entire letter appears in my blog here.

She was a sweetie...we miss her dearly but are so proud of her!

Cherry Blossom Festival...in Newark???

Who woulda thunk that there would be a Cherry Blossom Festival in Newark, New Jersey? We are the Garden State but that really isn't referring to the Newark area.

The festival is over the weekend but we decided to go to see the cherry trees during the week. I'm glad we went during the week -- it was crowded but probably nowhere near as crowded as it would be over the weekend. And most of the cherry trees were blooming.

After seeing the cherry trees, we realized we have a weeping cherry tree in our front yard.

Two tired dogs...it's always a good thing!

Two little bunnies...

Nope...not the little furry ones (although we have plenty of those in the neighborhood) -- these are the infant kind. One of the fun things about babies is that you can dress them up in all sorts of silly things. I had to make little Easter ears for our nephew Jake and cousin Frankie.

According to FamilyTree Maker, little cousin Frankie is Ed's 1st cousin twice removed :-)

Blue Mountain Lake...Quail Goes Swimming!

It was a beautiful weekend so we decided to go to Blue Mountain Lake. It was very quiet up there and we only saw a few people. We had been there once before with Anita and she loved it. She really was a water dog and she just loved to swim.

Harley loves to swim too. Quail on the other hand, has never been in...until now.
Ed tossed the water toy into the lake and Harley dove right in. Quail jumped right in after him, surprising both us and herself in the process. I don't think she knew what she was doing. She went under and then popped right up.

It's a good thing swimming is instinctual in dogs because Quail just doggy-paddled her way back to shore -- look at how much splash she has compared to Harley -- she definitely startled herself when she jumped in. We tried to get her back in by tossing the water toy and sticks in -- she would run up to the edge but that was about it. Later on in our walk along the lake, she did go in to about half-way up her legs but that was it.

The great thing about walks and hikes is that you end up with two very tired dogs. At least they dried off by the time we got home.

Yes, I am an adult...

The best part of being a grown-up is that I can eat cake for breakfast if I want to...no, I did not eat the whole cake...just a tiny slice.
The worst part of being a grown-up is that there is no one else to blame when I get a terrible sugar headache especially since I should have known better than to eat a piece of cake for breakfast.
And yes, I will more than likely eat cake for breakfast in the future.

Leaving on a Jet Plane

Two weeks ago, we went on our annual Seeing Eye puppy tour of Newark Airport. It's a great experience for the pups and we always have fun too.
We get to see the emergency vehicles at the airport and we walk around one of them while the sirens are blaring -- a great experience for our puppies to have to behave with lots of noise and commotion. At past visits, we've even seen the airport dogs at work demonstrating how they sniff things out.
After our walk around the blaring sirens, we boarded a bus to the Continental terminal. It's amazing how there can be about 20 dogs on a bus with no barking. All the pups are sitting nicely tucked under the seats.

We walked around the terminal and then boarded a Continental Express Jet. Nope, we didn't get to fly anywhere but it is yet another great experience for the pups. Quail didn't fit in the overhead compartment so she sat on the floor :-)

The most important thing Quail learned to do at the airport is wait. :-)
Our trip to the airport made the newspaper and you can read the article on our puppy club website.
